Rencontres Arles Picks
Just got back from Arles International photography festival a couple of weeks ago. One of the better years in my opinion, despite the absence of a star curator. One of the best shows by Zhang Dali whose work exposes the doctoring of photographs by Chinese Communist Party throughout the years. I particularly enjoyed the pre-photoshop manipulations evidenced. The best of the best was some colour work by Ernst Haas that was just sublime. Images consisted mainly of reflections and refracted signs, reminiscent of Saul Leiter, but executed with a subtle yet singular power that left me breathless. Discoveries included pap-type photographer Jean Tigozzi and punk-rock aesthetic Peter Hujar.
